Advantages and disadvantages of globe valves
Globe valves are designed with a closure element (disk) that moves along the centerline of the valve seat. This linear motion creates a proportional relationship between the valve’s flow opening and the disk’s travel distance. The short travel distance of the valve stem, combined with its reliable shutoff capabilities, makes globe valves highly suitable for applications requiring precise flow control, throttling, and shutoff functions.
Advantages of globe valves:
Reduced Friction and Enhanced Durability
The friction between the disk and the valve body’s sealing surface during operation is lower compared to gate valves, resulting in greater wear resistance.
Compact Opening Height
The disk’s travel height is typically only one-fourth of the seat’s diameter, making the globe valve more space-efficient compared to gate valves.
Simple Sealing Design
With usually only one sealing surface on the valve body and disk, globe valves are easier to manufacture and maintain, ensuring long-term reliability.
High Temperature Resistance
The packing material, typically a mixture of asbestos and graphite, provides excellent thermal resistance. This makes globe valves ideal for high-temperature applications, such as steam systems.
Disadvantages of globe valves:
Higher Flow Resistance
Due to the change in the media’s flow direction as it passes through the valve, globe valves generally have higher flow resistance compared to many other valve types.
Slower Operation
The longer travel distance of the disk results in slower opening and closing times compared to ball valves, which operate more quickly.
Globe valves are a robust and versatile choice for applications that require reliable shutoff and precise flow control. While their higher flow resistance and slower operation may limit their use in certain systems, their durability, thermal resistance, and ease of maintenance make them a preferred option for steam systems and other high-temperature applications.
