Allowable Pressure Equation
The calculations of allowable pressure in the table above are made with the ANSI/ASME Piping Code B31.1 equation:
P = 2 SE (tm – A) / (Do – 2 y (tm – A)) (1)
where
P = allowable pressure (psi)
SE = maximum allowable stress in pipe wall (psi)
tm = wall thickness (in) Note! -12.5% manufacturing tolerance on wall thickness are used in the calculations above.
A = additional thickness depending of type of pipe (in) (A = 0 in for the calculations above)
y = a coefficient depending on material and temperature range (y = 0.4 for the calculations above)
Do = outside diameter (in)
Barlow’s Formula
Example – Calculating Allowable Pressure for a Steel Pipe
The allowable pressure for a 4 inch schedule 40 pipe at temperature 100oF and allowable stress 20000 psi can be calculated as
P = 2 (20000 psi) ((1 – 0.125) (0.237 in) – (0 in)) / ((4.5 in) – 2 (0.4) ((1 – 0.125) (0.237 in) – (0 in))) = 1914 psi
