Applications of check valves and their importance in pipeline systems
Check valves play a crucial role in preventing backflow in pipeline systems. They are commonly installed at the outlets of pumps and compressors to ensure that the medium flows in the intended direction. In general, check valves are essential for protecting equipment, maintaining system efficiency, and preventing potential damage caused by reverse flow.
Types of Check Valves and Their Applications
1.Lift Check Valve
Typically used in horizontal pipelines with a nominal diameter (DN) of 50mm or smaller.
Straight-through lift check valves can be installed in both horizontal and vertical pipelines.
Bottom valves, a type of check valve, are installed at pump inlets in vertical pipelines, ensuring that the medium flows from bottom to top.
2.Swing Check Valve
Designed for high-pressure applications, with a pressure rating (PN) up to 42MPa.
Suitable for large-diameter pipelines, with sizes reaching DN 2000mm or more.
Available in different materials for handling various media such as water, steam, gas, corrosive fluids, oil, food, and pharmaceuticals.
Can operate in a wide temperature range of -196°C to 800°C.
Can be installed in horizontal, vertical, or inclined pipelines, offering installation flexibility.

3.Butterfly Check Valve
Ideal for low-pressure, large-diameter applications, with a maximum nominal diameter exceeding 2000mm.
Typically used in systems where the pressure does not exceed 6.4MPa.
Often designed in a wafer-type structure, installed between two flanges in a pipeline.
Can be placed in horizontal, vertical, or inclined positions.
4.Diaphragm Check Valve
Best suited for pipelines prone to water hammer effects, as the diaphragm absorbs pressure surges.
Mainly used in low-pressure, normal-temperature systems, particularly in municipal water pipelines.
Works within a temperature range of -20°C to 120°C and at a pressure of ≤1.6MPa.
Can accommodate large diameters, exceeding DN 2000mm.
Offers simple structure, cost-effective manufacturing, and excellent water hammer prevention, making it increasingly popular.
5.Ball Check Valve
Features a rubber-coated ball as the sealing element, ensuring good sealing performance and resistance to water hammer.
Can be designed with single-ball or multi-ball configurations, allowing for larger diameters.
Not suitable for high-pressure applications, but widely used in medium- and low-pressure pipelines.
Stainless steel construction and PTFE-coated hollow balls make it suitable for handling corrosive media.
Operates within a temperature range of -101°C to 150°C, with a maximum nominal pressure of 4.0MPa and sizes ranging from DN 200mm to 1200mm.
