Basic principle, advantages and disadvantages of ultrasonic testing

Basic principle of ultrasonic testing:

Ultrasonic flaw detection is a method that uses ultrasonic energy to penetrate the depth of metal materials, and from one section to another section, reflection occurs at the edge of the interface to inspect the defects of parts. When the ultrasonic beam passes from the surface of the part to the metal from the probe, when it encounters the defect and the bottom surface of the part, the reflected wave will occur respectively, forming pulse waveform on the fluorescent screen The position and size of defects can be judged by impulse waveform.

Advantages and disadvantages:

Compared with X-ray flaw detection, ultrasonic flaw detection has the advantages of high sensitivity, short cycle, low cost, flexible and convenient, high efficiency and harmless to human body.

The disadvantages are that the working surface is required to be smooth, the experienced inspectors are required to identify the types of defects, and the defects are not intuitive; ultrasonic flaw detection is suitable for the inspection of parts with larger thickness.
